  • Maritime Gloucester + Awesome Gloucester = Awesome time!

L to R: Matt, Michael, David, Henry
Thursday June 5th was pouring rain, but that didn't stop the courageous crew of Awesome Gloucester from getting the job done at Maritime Gloucester!  We had a great time with Melanie, Kelsey, and Mary Kay, and got to tag along with some 5th graders on a field trip (and no, David, zombies are not an "invasive species").  Who knew you can pack so many exhibits, tours, and sea life into just a few hours?  We got some great footage of...

John Harvey all dressed up and only one way to go...
Yesterday at Paul Harling's Diving Locker Museum (located beneath Maritime Gloucester) we showed up for the Mark V Navy diving suit demonstration.  There was a good crowd of about 30 people, and we certainly weren't the only videographers, either.  Commercial diver John Harvey took a stroll to the bottom of the harbor in an antique dive suit and bell helmet.  We learned that this kind of technology has been in use for 100 years!  Very interesting shoot, met some fellow...

Did you see us downtown today?
Did you see us on Main Street today?  Michael Kelly and I were doing a little "man on the street" segment for Awesome Gloucester where we treat passers-by with a short quiz on the town history.  It was a sunny day and we had a great cross-section of people who were happy to be part of the show.

    Here were the questions:
    1) Q: When was the city of Gloucester incorporated?
A: Everyone said 1623, although different sources report...

    Virgilio's Bakery & Deli
You can't claim to make the "bread of the fisherman" in Gloucester, MA and take that statement lightly.  Today's shoot took us to Virgilio's Bakery & Deli in downtown Gloucester where we had a very hands-on experience with the baking process.  Our host David had a hand prepping dough, bagging bread, loading bread, and tasting bread, of course.  As a three-generation family business, it was great to see how this simple and wholesome tradition of breadmaking continues.

    The staff was more...

    Michael Kelly, sound grip
Sometimes you think you've got it all under control... and then you realize you've signed up to be a one-man-band to an audience that's expecting an orchestra.  Well, never fear Awesome Gloucesterites, because Michael Kelly is here to handle all your audio needs and to fix your malfunctioning memory cards.  Ever double check all your equipment before the big day, and then have a near-meltdown the day-of?  That ALMOST happened yesterday, but not on Michael's watch!  Yes, our trusted SDHC...

    Ryan & Wood Distillery
On Monday, April 28th, we had the our fist production date for Awesome Gloucester.  Ryan and Wood Distilleries is a family owned and operated business in Gloucester.  We got a great tour from Doug Ryan with some hands-on work, lots of information, and samples at the end.  We explored the artisan craft of American distilling as it's performed on site.  The crew had a good time, and special thanks to Doug, Bob, and Kathy Ryan for your time and participation...

How do you create a visual narrative that summarizes an entire community in less than one minute?

It took a few weeks and alot of leg work around town, but I think we've got something that comes close, or at least, gives you a feel for the show.  Fun, right?

Since this is a visual medium I'm working in, I'll let the images speak for themselves.  In the meantime, thanks to the musicians known as Hudson for allowing...
